    Hello U16/U18 biathletes,

It has been a solid month of May for many athletes. The training hours are a bit lower this week, so be sure to prioritize rest and recovery. Keep up the good work and keep updating your training peaks to help us coaches analyze your training/measure fatigue.  With our 3,000M run coming up on Wednesday June 14 from 6pm-7pm at the Nakoda Elementary School Track, we will continue our focus on running throughout the spring.  This Wednesday’s intensity will be athlete-driven based on your goal for your 3,000M time.  Here is the link to our previous 3,000M Data to help you with choosing a goal time.

Also this week we will have a special presentation by Katie Weaver (U of C student, 2023 World Senior Championship racer, and World Cup Academy athlete) about her experience with an eating disorder and Relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome (RED-S).  This is an important topic in society and especially among endurance athletes.  It will be in the Haig Room on Tuesday (Females 4:45-5:45, Males 5:45-6:45) and all athletes in the U16/U18 program are invited (Multi, Primo, TTS-Dev).  Parents, we will be happy to share the presentation with you (send Matt an email if you would like a copy), but would like the athletes to have the greatest opportunity to engage with Katie and each other; to that end we will keep the groups small and limit attendance to athletes. As with all team events attendance is optional but we coaches see great value in this discussion.

We will begin holding coach-athlete meetings this week. If you haven’t yet signed up, please put your name down for a meeting slot here. As already mentioned, this meeting will be a chance to discuss goals for the year, what you need to thrive as an athlete, and give you a chance to ask questions of your coach. Please find the “goals sheet” in your athlete folder on Google Drive and mark down 1-2 weaknesses and 1-2 strengths you have for each category (physical, shooting, etc.). We will cover these in the meeting.

Lastly, a reminder that we would like to see blood test results from U16/18 athletes, especially if you plan on attending the Haig Glacier camp. See Matt’s May 19 email for more details on what parameters to test for.

    Other upcoming events this week:
Monday(29) @7PM– Canmore Nordic AGM at the BWTC. All club members invited.

Sunday(4) @6PM– Season Wrap up & Celebration of Alain’s long coaching career.

4:45-6:16 Track Workout @ LGMS- Going for Speed
Today we will be running 300M repeats 10% faster than your 3,000M goal time.  They will be hard by the end, but it is a great workout, develops running form, and can help you achieve your goal. This will be a Z6 workout, so adjust your after school snack accordingly- ideally something light ~3pm.

    Thursday(1)
    TTS Dev
    5:00-6:00 Strength with Chelsea- Females
    6:00-7:00 Strength with Chelsea- Males
Just strength tonight, no extra Z2 planned.

    Saturday(3)
    Multi/Primo/TTS Dev
9:00-1:00 Volume shooting at Shark with running combo.
Be prepared for all weather, bring at least 6 boxes of ammunition, and pack a lunch since we will have a half hour break in the day. We will be doing some precision shooting so bring SK Standard Plus to use if you train on a cheaper ammunition. If you do not have SK at the moment, borrow some from a friend or talk to Stu about buying some from the club.

“My comfort zone is like a little bubble around me, and I’ve pushed it in different directions and made it bigger and bigger until these objectives that seemed totally crazy eventually fall within the realm of the possible.” -Alex Honnold
